Project Overview

A brief look at the game's concept, mechanics, and development journey.

Tales of Orelia is a game developed by Lazy Tank Studios, and created by a team of 20 students from Solent University. One of the key challenges was to ensure the asset file size remained under 50KB, requiring extensive optimization across the code, art, and sound.

Inspired by titles like Zelda and Pokemon, Orelia embraces retro elements, featuring limited tile assets, pixel art, engaging quest lines, immersive dungeons, and a vast world with four unique biomes for players to explore.

My Contribution

Leading the visual design, sound experience, and quality control, while enhancing the game's market presence.

  • Designed the logo, leading the marketing efforts and establishing the visual identity for the game.

  • Led the art department, overseeing a team of 5 students, delegating tasks, and assessing weekly progress.

  • Collaborated daily with studio leads, representing the art department in various meetings and strategic discussions.

  • Created over 63 retro sound effects using OpenMPT, with more than 50 converted into a synthesiser, both in-house and in Unity.

  • Optimised audio samples to adhere to the 50KB asset size limit, ensuring efficient game performance without compromising quality.

  • Worked closely with programmers to seamlessly integrate sound effects into the game.

  • Co-created two trailers—Gameplay and Teaser—by storyboarding, editing, and polishing in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

  • Captured over 5 high-quality beauty screenshots to enhance the game's presence on Itch.io.

  • Wrote an in-depth Post-Mortem/Reflective Report, analysing the project's successes and areas for improvement.
