Inside the ruins: Hardships (#1)

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of 'Inside the ruins'. Starting from October, expect to see monthly blogs that provide an in-depth look at the current state of The Forsaken Ruins: Early Access version. Moreover, these blogs are intended to offer insight into a wider area of game development, including topics such as; overcoming roadblocks, managing project scope, mistakes made during development and general motivation.

I hope to continue working on The Forsaken Ruins: Early Access version right up until the end of this year, where I have decided to shut up shop. It has been a long and arduous road, but I feel truly proud of the game in its current state. I look forward to delivering the fifth and final update later this year, which hopefully will include Steam achievements and controller support.

Current Status

Unfortunately, the laptop I am currently using to develop The Forsaken Ruins has decided to die. The laptop that carried me throughout my university years no less! I suppose I could be considered somewhat fortunate that it did not occur during my studies... but it's still rather upsetting. I plan to repair it soon and hopefully start developing again in November.

I have recently acquired new hardware and found out that The Forsaken Ruins is unable to run on my new system. Therefore I hope to deliver the next update soon! Note to self... remember to test your game on as many different machines as possible prior to release...

Reasons for Delay

There are endless reasons as to why The Forsaken Ruins is still in early access (I hope to discuss these reasons in more detail later on). The Forsaken Ruins began as a university final major project in the midst of the pandemic. Since then, I have started on other projects attempting to boost my skills in every department of video game development. And whenever I return to developing The Forsaken Ruins I spend the majority of my time fixing past mistakes or finding new ways to optimise old features - and so begins the endless cycle of creating new features and optimising them later on.

At some point, I feel I need to draw the line and say "look you can either spend your whole life trying to make the perfect game or accept that this game is a testament to how much you currently know and move on". I presume the latter is a much healthier approach...

Tumblr Blogs

I will continue to post patch notes on my Tumblr page, but as far as general blogging is concerned, all posts will be uploaded onto this site from now on. In addition, this no longer restricts me from just writing about The Forsaken Ruins (even though I love to do that).

Farewell

That pretty much wraps up the first edition of 'Inside the ruins'! I hope you have enjoyed this month's short read and look forward to the next addition. Ta-tah for now!
