Inside the ruins: Motivation & Fixes (#2)

Hello, and welcome to the second edition of 'Inside the ruins'. Firstly, I want to apologise for not delivering on monthly blogs. I was very busy during the month of November and therefore, unable to post about the current state of The Forsaken Ruins. To save me from feeling guilty in the future, I have decided to ditch monthly blogs completely (that lasted long) and rather post whenever I see fit.

In addition, I have decided to give myself extra time to properly finish off The Forsaken Ruins. Hard to believe it turns two years old in May. I am now on a revised track to deliver the last update soon. I want to take this blog post to talk about its current state in December, general motivation, and finally, to inform you of the updated roadmap leading into 2022.

Status Report

My laptop is still broken. And after playing The Forsaken Ruins (1.7.0) on my new computer, I found out why testing on multiple machines is vital. If you play the game now, and dependant on your PC specs, you could be met with this prompt (see image below). You'll be unable to press 'No', resulting in an unplayable state. So, using version control, I re-downloaded the project files and got to work developing the game once more.

The Forsaken Ruins (UI Bug)

I opened up the project and was greeted with multiple errors (mainly caused by the saving system). I did my best to mitigate these issues (by commenting out code) and worked from there. You wouldn't believe it, but the game was also running at 5000 fps as I failed to restrict the maximum number of frames the game could run at... what a rookie error! After a couple of days of patchwork, the game is now in a stable enough condition to play. Once I have finished bug fixing, I will then move on to set dressing each level.

Current Motivation

Motivation levels are good. I desperately want to finish the game and be able to look back at it fondly. Life as an indie developer has its hardships, although I find certain things that can make my life and work, easier. For example, cleaning my office space the night before I start work. Or waking up at a specific time every day (I must admit, I'm still working on that one). Furthermore, regular exercise is vital if I want to maintain high levels of concentration and motivation. I am in a fortunate position now to try and become a self-sustaining indie developer, but like all things, you need to work hard at what you want.

Future Intentions

As of right now, the final update is not ready to go live. But I am feeling better about how the game is progressing! I will continue to bug fix and then move on to set dressing. After that, I will see about implementing Unity's new input system. Players would then have the option to use either MNK or controller. Finally, I want to implement achievements for the game. I am aiming to provide updates around February next year.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

That pretty much does it for the second edition of 'Inside the ruins'! Hopefully, I have more positive news to share in the comings months as I look to finally wrap things up. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and be sure to have a better new year! Here's to 2022! Goodbye for now!
